Gastric Bypass Surgery Questions
What are the downsides to gastric bypass surgery? specifically what are the nutritional ramifications because I have read that B-vitamins and protein cannot be absorbed because of the portion of small intestine that is bypassed. Also, what happens if there is a pregancy? What happens to a developing fetus if the B-vitamins and protein is not accessible? What are other downsides to gastric bypass surgery? I want to make the best informed decision and I am afraid that I am only hearing of the "up" sides of surgery or at best "sugar coated" negative sides to the surgery. I would like the most information anyone is able to give me! Thank you!
How do you find out if your insurance will cover gastric bypass surgery? I am not very proficient in understanding how insurance companies work. I am interested in having gastric bypass surgery. My weight has gotten out of control and I have an appointment with my physician next week. I'm sure she will be able to help, but I want to go in with as much knowledge as I can. Thanks for any answers that you can give me as far as insurance goes and anything about gastric bypass.
If my insurance covers gastric bypass surgery, do I have to go through the long process of getting approved? My cousin has gastric bypass surgery, and to get insurance to pay she had to go through 6 months of "medically treated weightloss", whatever that is, and had to write a long letter on why she felt she needed the surgery. She had to go see a phychiatrist for a evaluation, had to get a pap smear, and all kinds of other stuff. I checked with my insurance, and it covers bypass surgery. It just has to be pre-certified. Which any surgery I may have has to be precertified. So I was wondering since my insurance will pay, will I have to go through that long process too?

Can you have Gastric Bypass Surgery if you have Hepatitis C? My mother has Hepatitis C, she has already finished treatment for the Hepatitis and recently everything has been fine. On her last tests nothing even showed up. A few days ago she found out she was a candidate for Gastric Bypass surgery. While she is not heavily overweight, she does meet the guidelines and would like to have it done. Her heart doctor told her she needed to find out if her having Hepatitis C would interfere with that or cause them to not allow her to receive the surgery before he filled out all the paper work. So I'm trying to find out for her. Thanks!
Do you know someone who has had gastric bypass surgery? How did it affect their life? My grandmother is severely obese because of a condition involving her thyroid, the doctors are wanting to perform gastric bypass surgery on her but she is afraid of what could happen after the surgery. Do you know any successful stories dealing with gastric bypass surgery that I could show to my grandmother to help ease her fear of having the surgery? I would really apprieciate it. Thanks.

Well, if a person is bed ridden and can't walk becuse of obesity- it's a valid option- what do you think- is gastric bypass surgery an approprioate- or lazy way to lose excessive ammounts of weight?

I would like to know what happens to the remainder of the stomach in gastric bypass surgery.? I understand how gastric bypass surgery is done. What I want to know is this: There is a large portion of the stomach left after the small portion with which the pouch is created is removed from the top of the stomach. The small pouch portion is connect to the bowel that had been connected to the prior to it's removal from the bottom of the "big" stomach. What happens to the rest of the stomach that has been "disconnected"? Thanks for any help.

gastric bypass? I personally know 4 people who have had the gastric bypass surgery done who had no surgical complications. Are the incidences of mortality due to the surgery higher in children than adults and are there are specific risk factors in children that are not found in adult cases?
Gastric Bypass Surgery, help? Lately I have been really upset with my mother. I'm 13, and I have never really fought with her before. Not like it's been. I feel like she is hiding something from me. Something big. I am suspicious that she got gastric bypass surgery. Over the past few months she has had a lot of meetings, which she won't tell me what they are for. And then about a month ago she started on a "diet". She has already lost over 25 lbs! I don't believe that possible for her, she has tried many diets, and over a course of five months of each of them she'd lose no more than 10 pounds. She has recently cut off all alchohol, and been taking very many vitamins. Protien shots. Protien drops, daily calcium shakes, smoothies. And even some preschription meds that she says are for the flu, which I don't remember her having. I think she got the surgery when I was at my dads house, they are divorced and I go back and forth from week to week. So thats enough time for the surgery, but I understand that So thats enough time for the surgery, but I understand that the recovery is a much longer process. She's also always feeling sick. I don't know how to talk to her about this. I've been talking to my dad about this for a few weeks. And my dad is a very smart guy. He believes it too. He's shown be articles about mood changes, rapid weight loss, and every other simptom. I am currently really unhappy with her. I know she's hiding something, and I need some proof. Ask questions too, I'll add additional details. Just try to explain to me what might be going on. Jennifer, you see, I would totally support her for doing it. Because she is overweight, and I know she neverl iked it. I just think that you should tell your kids when you get surgery! I want to be there for her, but I can't be there for her if she doesn't tell me the truth! I'm worried. And I don't think she should keep things like that from me.
Will Texas Medicaid pay for gastric bypass/weight loss surgery? I am on SSI and receive Medicaid. I am needing to have weight loss surgery and the only insurance I have is Medicaid. Does anyone know if there are doctors in the Dallas/fort worth or even east texas area that will accept Medicaid for the gastric bypass surgery? Or are there doctors who donate the services for free on occasion?
Gastric Bypass Surgery? My mother had a gastric bypass 4 years ago and had a lot of complications that eventually killed her earlier this year. She was told at the time she went in for the surgery that she had only 10 years left, and that they would only be "decent" and not enjoyable (Doctor's words). He sold her on the surgery for the money & as a result, she only had 4 miserable years instead of 10 decent ones. I understand the surgery works sometimes with great results for people, but I can't help but feel angry when I see television programs talking about how wonderful it is. My feeling is that if even one person suffers like my mother did, then that cancels out any good that can come from it. I wish people would report both sides of the surgery- the good AND the bad when they do specials about it on television. I feel like people are being led blindly to believe that this surgery will fix them when the statistics rise each year on the gastric bypass death toll. Are these valid feelings or just grief? When she was told about the surgery she was told it was about 1 in a million people that die from it and that because of her age, she should be fine. She knew there were risks- but it was never made clear what they are- and when you take somebody that has struggled with obesity their whole life and tell them there is a very slight possibility the surgery will kill them but they are definitely gonna die if they don't get the surgery, you can't expect them to think rationally.
I think I should get gastric bypass surgery, but should I really? I'm an 18 year old male who has been overweight and then obese since around 8 years old. I've tried countless diets and diet supplements, all ending with me losing some weight, but eventually bouncing back. The past few years I have considered gastric bypass surgery or lap band (a less serious form) but I am not sure. Everyone knows me as the "big guy" including myself and I just feel like I will be nobody without my "big" persona I carry. On the other page there is the risks of heart problems, diabetes, and my asthma complications. I am on the fence with whether to decide the surgery or just be me and take the risks of the complications in the future. Being the big man I am has its advantages as far as strength and other things, while losing weight would mean less health problems and being able to become more attractive. What should I do in your opinions?
DO I QUALIFY FOR GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY? so ive tried everything under the sun to lose weight and i just cant. i was considering getting gastric bypass surgery but i wasnt sure if someone my size/age would quality. im 5'7 190lbs and 20 years old.
Do you have good ideas for gifts to give a co-worker who is having gastric bypass surgery? I am thinking of making up a basket full of various items that would be extremely useful and hopefully can help pass time during their recovery. If you have experienced the surgery, or know someone who has, what kind of stuff do you think they would really want/need after coming home from the hospital? Please share your ideas with me. Many thanks in advance!
Gastric Bypass surgery & Pregnancy? When I got pregnant with my daughter in 2004 I was 1 year out after having Gastric Bypass Surgery. Before surgery i weight 250. I lost 100lbs by the time I got pregnant. Gained 10 pounds throughout my pregnancy and lost 20 when I had her! I was considered a high risk pregnancy and was monitored carefully. My daughter was born 2 weeks early and VERY healthy, although she was only 5 pounds 3 ounces. 18 inches long. We are TTC #2 and I am now about 4-5 years out of surgery. I do have low iron & anemia because of the surgery. I am on prenatal vitamins & iron pills and they are working pretty good on getting my levels up some. My question is...Since it has been 4-5 years since my Gastric Bypass surgery, would I still be conisidered a high risk because of my low iron & anemia? And will i be monitored like I was during my first pregnancy? Jill, Thank you VERY much for your answer. :) Yes, my daughter was tiny most likely from not receiving all of the nutrients. The doctors didn't say too much about it because after checking her out thoroughly she was extremely healthy, although small. Even stays above her age level in learning :) Even now, being 4-5 years out of surgery my body still does not absorb the nutrients it should. That is why I am on both prenatal AND iron pills prescribed by the doctor in order to bring my levels to a normal rate. And to get my body prepared for another baby. Hopefully VERY SOON! :) Thank you again for your quick response and great answer! :)
gastric bypass surgery? My son died from complications from this surgery. Doctors failed to detect a puncture to his intestine. What bothered me, was no doctor would order him a one month liquid diet to see if he could lose weight. Yet, this is excatly what you have to do when you have a bypass surgery. No solids for two weeks prior or after. Hmmm. makes one wonder. If the one-month liquid diet is unsafe, why is it OK if you are having bypass surgery. could it be....... that you just might LOSE WEIGHT without needing surgery ????? (and the surgeons lose money??) The Gastric Center was a factory line, get them in get them out. Yet, those 'disgustingly obese 400lb-ers were no were to be found there. They were deemed too-high risk for the surgery. Generally 5'5 women weighed over 225 lbs.+ were the typical patient. How dngerously 'morbidly obese' is that ??? and most of these 225lb-ers had counsling, and were found to 'be highly unlikely' to lose weight by diet and excersise. this surgery is a business.
Gastric Bypass!? Does anyonw know how much (approx) is a gastric bypass surgery? and how many pounds overweight do you have to be???
Gastric bypass? Earlier I asked a lengthy quesiton in the pregnancy forum about my story but I think maybe I should have come straight to the point. Has anyone had gastric bypass surgery? Was it helpful/effective for you in battling obesity? Would you do it again? I am currently pregnant with my second child (both children will be 14 months apart in age). I have been morbidly obese since puberty and both of my parents are exactly the same and have heart disease, diabetes, and health problems from weight. I am lucky that I haven't developed any of it and plan to have this procedure a year or so after I have this baby (May 2008). So if you have any advice or experience with this procedue please share. This will be my last pregnancy and our family is complete which is why I considered having the procedure.
Gastric Bypass? How can i find out if my insurance will cover gastric bypass surgery?

Gaining weight after having a gastric bypass surgery? I had a gastric bypass surgery done at the age of 18, three years ago. I got pregnant a year ago, and gave birth two months ago. I weighed 457 lbs. before the surgery, and got down to 190 lbs. I gained up to 235 before pregnancy, and am now 262. This is totally unacceptable, and I'm in the process of putting a stop to it. Aside from diet and exercise, I was also thinking about taking Phentermine, a presciption weight loss drug. Has anyone else had issues gaining weight after a gastric bypass? If so, how did you lose this weight? Are there any support groups/info forums on losing GAINED weight after your gastric bypass? Thanks!
Gastric Bypass Surgery????????? Help Help Help? i am a 37 year old female i had Gastric Bypass Surgery in 2001, i lost 180 lbs. i now have alot of skin hanging on my arms, upper and lower legs, chin, thighs, rear end, boobs, etc... My question is where do i go? What can I do? Is there a doctor out there that covers this proceedure? Willing to travel. I have a question about gastric bypass surgery? Before having gastric bypass surgery my husbands aunt had to lose 40 pounds in one month. Her doctor had her prepare meals and measure them then place them in containers and freeze them. She was to eat five of them a day and she lost the 40 pounds the first month and was able to have her gastric bypass surgery. What I'm wondering is if anyone knows what kind of food doctors tell their gastric bypass patients to eat to lose all that weight before their surgery and how to prepare it. I would really appreciate any help on this subject. Thanks. By the way I am not having gastric bypass surgery I just want to know what they eat to lose weight so I can do it and lose weight too naturally.

Nicole Richie and gastric bypass surgery? Nicole Richie recently told an interveiwer that she had gastric bypass surgery to lose all her weight. So if Nicole Richie ( who was NOT overweight pre losing a bunch of weight) can get gastric bypass surgery, does this mean they are starting to offer it to people that are just trying to get thin and not necissarily twice the size they are supposed to be? DONT JUDGE THE QUESTION, JUST ANSWER OR MOVE ON

Hi there, I found some good studies and medical journals on post- gastric-bypass surgery patients and pregnancy but I was wondering if anyone had some personal experiences they could share. Thanks in advance!
Sister is having gastric bypass surgery as we speak!? My sister has always been heavier than I am (right now, I weigh 214lbs and she was always about 20lbs more than I). Well this afternoon she is having gastric bypass surgery. I would probably have it done as well, but we dont have any health insurance where she does. I have three questions, 1. Has anyone heard of any surgeries of this type going wrong? 2. How many people who have this surgery gain the weight back? And 3. Should I be feeling guilty because she will probably end up being smaller than I? Just a note, I do think I am because today I started a diet of 2 cans of slim fast a day, in between snack of grapes, drinking only water and will have a sensible meal (2/3 smaller portions). In your opinions, do you think I can make this work just as well as she can. What do you all think of my plan, will it work?
about gastric bypass surgery.? My sister had gastric bypass about 3 years ago, she lost about 150 lbs, and really had no bad side effects from it. Now I saw her sunday after not seeing her in about a year, and she has gained a substantial amount of the weight back, I am guessing about 75lbs. Of course I didn't come right out and ask how much. My question is a-how is that possible, maybe I don't understand the concept behind the surgery, but I don't see how it is possible to gain that much back. and B-could it lead to more health complications for her. Thank you in advance for all the info
If anyone has ever had the gastric bypass surgery.? If anyone has ever had the gastric bypass surgery what medical conditions did you have aginst you. Will insurance cover your surgery automaticlly if you have, Sleep Apnea, High Blood Pressure, Asthma, Joint pain, abd has been over weight all their lifes? I do know that most insurance plans require 6 months diet plan too and by my DR. the suregery is medically necessary for me to have. Please help, Thank you!!!
In a Gastric Bypass surgery....? I noticed that alot of the patients after losing the weight have these grotesque looking folds of skin around their entire body. Take a look at these pictures: http://www.plasticsurgery4u.com/a/after_weight_loss/ I was wondering if this also happens if you lose weight naturally, through diet and exercise for example. If a doctor, nurse or someone who has lost weight be it throgh gastric bypass surgery or diet can answer would be great. But all opinions welcomed.
Pregnant after Open Gastric Bypass Surgery?? I had the bypass a little over a year ago...I was looking for information on pregnancy after an open gastric bypass surgery..?? internet excess to this question is running me in circles..??Please help!!
Anyone have a Pregnancy after Gastric Bypass Surgery? My daughter has gained only 3 pounds at 32 weeks along.? My daughter is 35 years old and is pregnant for the first time. She had gastric bypass surgery 4 years ago, and lost 140 pounds. She is now at 180 and is 5'11". She is 32 weeks pregnant, and has gained 2 and 1/2 pounds throughout her pregnancy so far. She eats all the time, so it not like shes trying to lose weight. The doctor is stumped. I think it's because of the gastric bypass surgery. Have you ever seen a pregnancy where the mother gained only 3 pounds? Could she have a healthy baby? Any advice is appreciated! At 32 weeks, she really isn't showing alot.
how safe is gastric bypass surgery? I was just wondering if anyone out there is familiar with the gastric bypass surgery and how safe it is?...i've heard lots of horrible things...can anyone help me?
