Heart Surgery Cost Questions
How much does it cost the NHS and other health care systems to perform standard surgical procedures? When comparing which health systems are better/worse, I think this is important. What do, say, common operations such as cataract removal, organ transplants, mending broken bones, ligament repair, heart surgery, removing gallstones, etc etc cost on the NHS, and what do they cost in other healthcare systems?
What can I do to receive financial help for a surgery if I have no insurance? My aunt has diabetes and congestive heart failure. She needs to have an angiogram and some other work in her heart immediately to keep her alive; also, she needs to have some laser surgery on her eye to keep her from going blind. They have very little insurance. Her insurance covers only doctor office visits. His insurance is different but only a little better. The angiogram is going to cost between 2,000 and 4,000 dollars and the second heart surgery will be about $60,000. They may be able to pay for the first one, but that will drain the savings. After that, they will have all of the eye stuff to pay for. She is no longer able to work, so they are living only on his income. She had to quit her job because her diabetes was out of control (when she quit she had not yet been diagnosed). I was wondering if anyone knew what we could do to begin getting some assisstance. Any help would be appreciated.
How much did my surgery cost? I was 3 weeks old and i never really asked my parents but now i am wondering how much it was. We arent the richest of families but not poor. It was an Open Heart: Reparation of the Aortic Valve. The valve was too narrow and they needed it enlarged. How much did this surgery cost in 1994?
How much does a surgeon make for one surgery? Lets say a heart surgeon performed open heart surgery on a patient, and the patients bill ended up being around $100,000. How much of that would the surgeon get, and how much would the rest of the people in the OR get? Does the hospital make money from a surgey?
How do I insure for the possible loss of my son when he is born? My wife is 20 weeks pregnant and we learned our son will need open heart surgery as soon as he is born. I'd like to know how best to prepare to cover the costs in the event he passes. Save? Insurance? If there is an insurance policy, what kind exactly? Your help is much appreciated. Thank you for your answers. Of course I am hoping for the best and hate to think of the worst-case scenario, but it is what it is and we need to be prepared. Thanks for your support.
How much do you think I should keep for emergency ? How much should I keep as a budget for illness , sickness or health problems that are too much costing for 2 persons ? I know that my question is general as cases differ , but I can narrow my question to a heart surgery , or such emergencies .
What is a good gift to bring to a 9 year old girl who is in the hospital? A 9 year old girl I know is having heart surgery the day before Halloween. I am going to go up and visit her, but I need gift ideas. Any suggestions? I would kind of like it to be a unique gift (not teddy bears and balloons) and would like to keep the cost under $20 if possible. Thanks for all the help! :)

How much would a Uterine Ablation cost? Getting Uterine Ablation at Seton Medical in Austin, TX. Want to know how much the outpatient surgery costs? Not asking how much my portion will be, just what the hospital will bill?
How are people actually against universal health care in America? It's hard to believe that people would actually be against universal health care and regulations on the health care industry. My parent friends were just telling them about their son who needed open heart surgery when he was 1 which cost $100,000. After that it was very difficult to get him health insurance and it cost so much, they couldn't even divulge how much it was. Now he's 18 and needs open heart surgery again and it's going to cost them $200,000!!! What would someone who's against universal health care tell them?
How much should I keep as budget for emergency ? How much should I keep as a budget for illness , sickness or health problems that are too much costing for 2 persons ? I know that my question is general as cases differ , but I can narrow my question to a heart surgery , or such emergencies
What should I expect from my daughters High pulmonary pressures? My daughter was born with a Congenital Heart Disease. She has had her heart surgery and although they were able to complete all the repairs they needed to do and then some, her heart is still not functioning well. She looks great, but her Echos and EKG's haven't changed since the surgery. What I am wondering is if she will have the opportunity to live a normal life. Will she be able to eventually run and play? More than anything in the world I want her to be happy and feel loved.
How much does facial surgery cost? Would you get it if me? At 17 factors have contributed to excessive stress and excessive acne, and a few acne scars on my face. One summer at age 17 of excessive stress lead me to not putting on enough sunscreen. Which lead my face to red/pink. Before that it was white/beige/tan. (Tan in summer with sunscreen the previous every year). Every day because of my face's pink/red appearance and a couple of acne scars, I get treated differently. When I need to buy shirts, I want to wear white, beige, orange, light purple, salmon, and light blue. That would be me being myself. Not that anyone should care what people think but people (we all have haters, true) say the meanest things to me and about me when I wear bright shirts. Or when I smile or laugh I don't turn red every time. Before that awful summer I looked normal and was treated like a good looking person. Since then it's been "There's that weird guy," "He's soo ugly," "Gross, gross, gross" "That is not a good looking guy," etc. Non-supportive friends (former friends) told me "You look good in black." Everyone looks good in black though. Or "If you have personality it doesn't matter if you're the ugliest guy in the world." Bottom line: Life is way too short not to live to the fullest. And if someone is not themselves they will be unhappy. Some may say "You should just be yourself anyway and not care what people think." I hear ya, and I know what you mean. Yet I am willing to pay thousands, if not more, for one facial surgery. It's mainly the forehead, nose, and cheeks. the jaw and neck isn't bad. Even when happy in other area of life, this brings me down every day. Even in dark shirts, I constantly am told I look like a teenager, or that my purple shirt matches my purple face, my white coat makes my face look like a cherry, etc. I know I did this to myself, I won't tell you why summer and life at age 17 was so stressful. But all the pictures of me at age 15, 16, and younger, I would do anything to have that face back. Also, eating healthy foods only and having low stress improved the face skin, but only to a degree. About how much would such a surgery cost? I know celebrities Lark Voorhies and the late Michael Jackson have had facial surgery. Yet the doctors did TOO much to Lark's face. Michael- you've seen him, looked like a total different person. Though, some non-celebrities have had facial work done, ie removal of facial hair, removal of (at the time) permanent zits, and they look great/don't regret it, everyone knew it was a good move. I am nervous that they might do too much on me and it would be worse. Yet this one thing every day I hate. And doctors in this field in general don't have before/after photos of many patients because many were overdone and hate it wishing they could go back. And yes I know to be grateful as many are homeless, starving, and there is much more to life. I'll lastly say if it works I can wake up every day and look good again. Have inner (i know it may not seem like it) AND outer beauty. Dress as myself/be myself. Be that charismatic, confident high energy, loving, forgiving, smiling, laughing, dancing inspiring, living life, go getter, life of the party, mr. personality, positive person that I am. That the REAL me is. I have a strong, honest, fair side too. But I want that kid at heart in me to live! I just wanna be myself again! Thank you for your help. Unless you know what this is like please do not judge. I appreciate your help and thanks in advance for being honest and doing so in a respectful manner. Have a lovely day
What can we do to reduce the cost of health care in America? People smoke cigarettes, then want the government to pay for their cancer treatment. They eat at McDonald's, then want the government to pay for their heart bypass surgery. They drink beer every day, then want the government to pay for their liver transplant. Why don't people just live healthy?
When someone is dying of pneumonia, why don't they get put on some machine to keep their blood oxygenated? Someone I know died of pneumonia a few days ago; he was on a respirator but his lungs were so badly damaged that his oxygen levels were still really low. It seems to me that we have the technology to keep someone's blood supplied with oxygen (for instance, the heart/lung machine used in open heart surgery.) Why isn't something like this part of the protocol for people dying of pneumonia until their lungs can get better?
How much does heart surgery cost? I am really worried that my parents won't be able to afford my surgery. I have insurance but i know that you still have to pay some. Everyone keeps telling me that that's the last thing i should be worried about but i can't help but feel guilty. it's stupid
Wife does not have full coverage and needs heart surgery? My wife has a ventricular septal defect and needs corrective surgery. She has MassHealth but they only cover less than half of the cost. The surgery will cost about ten-thousand dollars in total and we do not have that kind of money. The hospital wants full payment or the surgery will not be done. What can we do to make this happen? I live in Massachusetts and am having a hard time trying to find answers and that is why I am here.
What do you think of Hilary Clinton's medical plan ? I heard that this woman is trying to change our medical plan like Canada basically. In other words we would have to wait forever, 2-3 years for one little procedure for a sprain or a major procedure like heart surgery. I was a democrat until i heard this. It is scray because with our medical plans changing and everyone one on a 10 years long list would mean worse disease due to many not getting treatment fast enough and they mutate, more deaths.....Did yall know this or am i wrong ? Who is voting for her because she is just a female ?
How much does heart surgery cost? I am really worried that my parents won't be able to afford my surgery. I have insurance but i know that you still have to pay some. Everyone keeps telling me that that's the last thing i should be worried about but i can't help but feel guilty. it's stupid
Organizations that help pay for medical needs? My friend from work has a 15 year old son who is in need of open heart surgery. She is having problems with there insurance and Says they are probably going to have to sell their house to pay for surgery. This is the 2nd heart surgery their son is having. He is also having to have dialysis now. They have 2 other children. They can't get help from the state, they say they make to much to qualify for help. How much does cancer surgery cost for ferrets and is it worth it? hi. i have two adorable pet ferrets, a girl named nickie and a boy named snowball. they're very young, both about two years. but recently ive noticed that snowball can barely walk...he slips on his two back legs and gets up and tries again. he's lost a lot of weight, too. nickie has been losing hair at the base of her tail since january. i took them to the vet, and she said they might have cancer and if they do (she'll check again), they'll need surgery. i heard that surgery is really risky, and sometimes it's just not worth it. but as more time passes, i'm afraid if i dont get them the surgery they need they'll die young and ill be devastated. wat should i do???
How do I know which treadmill is best for me? I had heart surgery a few years ago, and doctor recommended I exercise more...but with all these choices I haven't a clue which one to choose. I'm thinking one that won't cost me a small fortune, durable and doesn't take up alot of space but yet that will last me a long time, possiblity a warranty with great impact/workout results. Any suggestions?? And NO!! I'm not fat like Gagan G says (the jerk!) I was under alot of stress at the time, and need an outlet to use it towards.

How to get 120-150gr of protein into a daily diet? My husband had triple bypass heart surgery ,do to complications is now temporary on dialysis . The dialysis Dr. advised him to consume 2-3 times the daily protein intake. eggs, steaks, chicken, fish. The guideline is 7gr protein in 1oz of any kind of meat. eggs have 6gr, ( the same as eggbeater )1 cup of cottage cheese has 30gr. How much does it cost you to support a dog? Three days ago, a dog came to my backyard. We think it lives 2-3 blocks away from us, we are not sure. But still, since nobody claimed it or posted anything at the laundry we decided to call the Animal Care & Control. They said they were gonna keep the dog for three days. If the owner doesn't come up in three days, they'll put it up for adoption. We were thinking of adopting it but my question is, about how much is it gonna cost us to support it? Monthly. It's a short-haired poodle. Thank you for your time.
What does Medical care cost in the UK? I'm a big fan of Micheal Moore's films, Have you seen Sicko? but my aunt lives in England and my dad has type 2 diabetes and had a double by-pass, but might need to have heart surgery again. We asked her about what we saw in in the movie about England, she said that you could go and see the doctor but you would still have to pay.........I'ld like to here from anyone in any other country that can tell me if that movie is accurate. Are there any countries where you can get serious medical care like heart surgery for free? And what are the rules for foreigners? In the movie they said that you don't have to pay for college in France, is that so?
Can a person with congestive heart failure get a heart transplant at age 76? 76 year old person with 15% functioning heart & defribrillator - seems a heart transplant would be a good option but the doctors say no. Why? Wow, so this is all about the money and the insurance companies? That really ticks me off. Thanks Danny. I'm on here asking for my father who is 76. He's had a bypass, and is in and out of the hospital what seems like every 4-6 months because of fluid buildup. I wish you the best also.
How do you think of the organ transplant for Japanese baby in the US? The Japanese 1-year-old boy who have severe congenital heart disease will undergo organ transplantation in the US. If the operation isn't be performed, he will die fatally as soon. The transplant hospitalization and surgery costs much money. His parents and ground-parents raised more than a hundred million yen. How do you think of that fact? In addition, the law of organ transplant for children is not ready in Japan, and its system has not been established yet. many children in this world are starving, lacking water, vaccine shortage. More importantly,I think, there are many children to wait to receive organ from donor in the US.
8 mo boston terrier with heart murmur, what will the surgery cost? I am thinking of adopting a 8 mo boston, but he has a grade 4+ heart murmur, the adoption agency says he might possibly need surgery, but they need to run tests first. They have him on medicine now to reduce the fluid in his lungs. I am very interested in adopting him, and was trying to find out how much the tests cost and/or how much the surgery would cost? Also what are the test for? and what kind of surgery would be needed? Also is it possible that once the surgery is done he could live a happy, fairly normal life? Does anyone know the cost of the surgery or the cost of the possible tests? Or explain what they are so i could look them up
Did you know that the new health care program will cost more money, where does it come from? Did you know that this new program, that hasn't been proven yet, will cost more money? Dr's are not happy about it, will it discourage you from getting the kind of operation that you need because you have to wait, till the gov. decides if you need that heart surgery? Will you die, waiting, like in England they are deciding if that older person is worth the expensive operation? Yes, do you know that this is the truth?
Can I legitimatly be refused heart surgery on NHS? I am writing on behalf of my grandfather. He is 89 years old and util recently was in the peak of health-very active. He needs a heart Op which he would want to return to his standard of health. The hospital are indicating he is now not well enougth for surgery and will not be in the future, despite needing it.I believe the age thing combined with cost effectiveness ,comes into it.Can a patient make an informed choice and insist on having surgery? If so how? What needs to happen to ensure surgery is given?

What are my chances of a medical waiver for labrum surgery for Army? I just went to MEPS today for my physical and was disqualified because I had labrum surgery 4 years ago. However, they are setting me up for a possible waiver with an Army doctor. Since my surgery I have played two years of college lacrosse and I continue to work out every single day and have never had a problem since. My recruiter seems to think it will not be an issue, but I know waivers are hard to come by. Is there anyone here who has been through this or has any idea what my chances are of getting a waiver? I also have a college degree in International Business and scored a 79 on the ASVAB, if that has any impact on their decision.

Anyone have an idea of the cost of open heart surgery for aortic stenosis on a 2 year old? I found out my daughter had this when she was 1, but a mild case. Just went to her 1 year visit and found that there is now a membrane that has grown and that extra strain of blood getting through besides the issue already (biocupse leaflets)...this is causing a slight build up on the wall of the left side of her heart and her risk level has gone up slightly. The doctor is going to monitor her now every 6 months, but says the probabilty of surgery is pretty high and before she gets much older. I have insurance, however will have out of pocket expense of course. Would like to have an idea of the overall cost of this so I can start saving for the % that I know I will have to pay. I can't find any "estimates" stated anyway on-line.

Why is plastic surgery expensive? I mean expensive compared to most other things. You can buy a cream for your face for $20, yet if you want your nose to be slightly slimmer (which no one but yourself really cares about since people are too busy living their own lives), you have to pay around $5000. That's just amazing to me, that these people can get away with their outrageous prices, which insurance doesn't even cover. Even if you have a major operation, you most likely wouldn't have to pay out of pocket fees that are THAT high. I mean if it wasn't expensive at all, our society would be in trouble since EVERYONE would be getting it, and we'd all be plastic people walking around. Then again, that's pretty much LA for you. But I don't get the expense. Can it be justified? I mean outside of hospital costs, anesthesia, etc. That alone is half the price or 1/3rd. I think the surgeons are BS"ing, it's not that complicated of a surgery compared to heart surgery, etc, they just want to profit it seems.
Is there any hospital like sathya saibaba medical institute in the world? I was having heart problem with 3 main arteries blocked.I had enlargement of the heart also. The hospitals advised me heart surgery costing huge amount.Ihad no such amount in hand.I was finding difficulty to meet my monthly for medicines. The next thing i am telling you will be unbelievable. The Hospital gave me free diagosis, free full treatment, free heart surgery and even train fare to return to my native place. I spent not even a single dime. This hopital gives free to all treatment in all branches of medicine and surgery both in Bangalore and in puttaparthy in south india. Anybody from any part of the world can come here and take free treatment.Sri Sathya Saibaba institute of higher medical sciences is situated at whitefield,Bangalore in Karnataka stae of south india. Are medical procedures such as heart attack, cancer, or something major very unaffordable even with insurance? I have great medical insurance and dental, through Aetna. The only downfall is that they ONLY cover 50% of psychiatric/psychology. Which is a shame, since I truly believe that this country can really use a better mental health care system. I've unfortunately been to the ER countless of times, due to being sick and asthma, but I'm working at better maintaining my health. The total expenses weren't too high, they were anywhere from $400 to $4000 ish, for one visit, the $4 grand one including full xrays, CT scan, ekg, etc, and with insurance they all came down to about $50 to $200 ish, after going through insurance, so it's not unreasonable, and they DO have payment plans. However, what if something major happened. Surgery, heart attack, cancer. Wouldn't that catapult the total costs into the $100,000 range? And even if I have insusrance then, how much would they cover? This really scares me. Should I be saving alot just in case? How do we prepare for this? Also do I need separate insurance to cover an extended stay in a hospital just in case, or is what I have now all you need? I'm confused, and scared, and what to take preventative measures before something awful happens/if something were to happen. to the first replyer: I understand that, but if you had a major heart attack or ongoing treatment, hospital stays for a long time, cancer, I doubt you'd just pay your $50 copay and that's the end of it.
Economics Question about what would happen if the state of California passed a tax on the services of doctors? The state of California recently considered passing a tax on the services of doctors in that state in order to raise revenue to pay for universal health coverage for California residents. Suppose the average open heart surgery costs $100,000, and at that price 23,339 surgeries are performed each year. What would the most likely outcome be in the market if a tax on surgeries is implemented? I don't understand exactly how I would explain this. I feel like it wouldn't change demand for surgeries that are required...I think that I'm not looking at this in the right way. Should I be explaining in terms of supply/demand or something else?
Where do i get financial assistance for a heart transplant? I am 56 years old male. I had a heart attack in 1994 and then quad bypass surgery later that year. I receive a small amount each month from Social Security and I have medicare. I also have Blue Cross of Georgia Insurance. I have not been physically able to work on a regular basis for several years, so I have very little income. I have been told I need a heart transplant. I have no idea how I can possibly pay for he cost for this surgery and the drugs I will need after surgery, along with the follow up visits for 8 weeks immediately after the surgery and the fact that I will have to travel 600 miles round trip. I am in hopes that someone can give me any information about any assistance there may be to help me pay for these cost.
Phils Heart Center? My friend who is in his mid 40's needs a bypass/ open heart surgery. How much (more or less) does it cost to have heart surgery?
Mother having Heart Bypass Surgery tommorrow, should I drop everything and fly home regardless of the cost? My Mother (age 78) who I have a distant relationship in recent years, has heart problems and is scheduled for emergency heart bypass surgery tommorrow. I do not know what to do. One of my sisters who has a better relationship with Mom has flown out to help my Father and is taking off from work this week. My other sister and I are debating if it is worth the cost and problems at work. They live in medium sized town 1000 miles away, with limited air servive, so a last minute ticket would cost about $900. Add the cost of car rental and hotel and you are talking about some serious money. I have one other sister who lives near by who is also doubtful she will make the long and expensive trip. Mom and Dad and I have always been distant and we only see each other on Christmas and talk maybe twice a year by phone. Conversations are brief and forced. What would you do? I work at a company that would not allow me to use sick leave to go out there because I am not the primary care giver, so I would have to go leave without pay.

Why do people continue to believe that high cost health care equals high quality health care? In a Pennsylvania government survey of the state’s 60 hospitals that perform heart bypass surgery, the best-paid hospital received nearly $100,000, on average, for the operation while the least-paid got less than $20,000. At both, patients had comparable lengths of stay and death rates. And among the 20 hospitals serving metropolitan Philadelphia, two of the highest paid actually had higher-than-expected death rates, the survey found. Canadian Medical Association Journal found that, over a two-year period in Ontario, 109 people suffered heart? In nations where the government provides universal health insurance -- such as Canada, Sweden and the United Kingdom -- there are few restraints on citizens' demand for health care. This leads to many citizens overusing health care and creates a strain on government budgets. To keep the costs from exploding, those governments must restrict access to health care by using waiting lists, canceling surgeries or delaying access to new treatments such as prescription drugs. The consequences can be quite harmful. In 1997, three patients in Northern Ontario, Canada, died while on a waiting list to receive heart surgery. One patient had been waiting more than six months to receive bypass surgery. In Britain, patient Mavis Skeet's cancer surgery was canceled four times, during which time her cancer became inoperable. This sort of rationing can even reach the top tiers of society. Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson, for example, had to wait eight months for a hip replacement. As a result, he suffered in great pain and was unable to perform some of his governmental duties. Alice Mahon, a former member of the British Parliament, needs the drug Lucentis to slow her macular degeneration. Because of delays due to the National Health Service not yet having approved Lucentis at the time of her diagnosis, she lost much of the sight in her left eye. Proponents of universal health insurance often dismiss such stories as "anecdotal." Yet there are plenty of studies in the medical literature showing death and sickness due to restricted access is systematic. An article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that, over a two-year period in Ontario, 109 people suffered heart attacks (50 of them fatal) while on the waiting list for a cardiac catheterization. A study of wait times for bypass surgery in Sweden concluded the "risk of death increases significantly with waiting time." Finally, a study in the journal Clinical Oncology examined 29 lung cancer patients in Britain who waited for treatment. It found more than 20 percent of potentially curable patients instead became terminally ill while on the waiting list. It is important to note, however, that all these people had health insurance -- that is, their governments would pay for their health care. What they did not have was ready access to treatment. As the Canadian Supreme Court said upon ruling a ban on private health care as unconstitutional, "access to a waiting list is not access to health care." As the debate over the future of the U.S. health-care system proceeds, it is important that we -- and especially lawmakers who will craft health policy -- understand the very real difference between health care and health insurance. It is vital we realize universal health insurance is not the same as universal health care. Universal health insurance provided by the government leads to rationing of health care that has adverse impacts on health, including death. Thus, we should be highly skeptical of politicians promising to improve our health care system with universal health insurance

I was looking for an organization who might be able to help cover the cost. He also has an enlarged heart and collapsed trachea. He is 7 yrs old and has a long life ahead of him.

Does anyone know if there are any government grants to help pay medical bills? My husband has been 100% permanently disabled for the past 6 years. Because of his disabilities, I cannot work outside the home - someone has to be here to care for my husband. We live well below the poverty level. My husband recently needed surgery to repair an aortic aneurism just beneath his heart that was ready to burst as well as a 2nd aneurism in his leg. During the surgery, the doctor had to put my husband on a heart-lung bypass machine. The surgery cost more than one million dollars of which Medicare paid 97% of the cost. Our problem is that because of our other bills (rent, electricity, car payment for our only car - we live in the country miles from anywhere & can't afford to move, furniture payment, car insurance montly payments, loan payment), we have literally no money to pay toward my husband's remaining medical bills. Our church gives us groceries every month & our children's schools supply our children with their clothing, shoes & school supplies.
ankloglossia (tounge-tie) corrective surgery questions? I'm 20 years old and I have what I think is the most severest kind of ankloglossia. What it is, where your tongue is connected at the back, mine goes all the way to the front. I can't stick out my tongue and the tip of my tongue is more heart-shaped than pointed. What I would like to know...if there is anyone out there who had this and had the corrective surgery at a later grown up part of their life. Did you have to go through any kind of speech therapy? How much did it cost? What kind of surgery is it? Also...do you think my singing range would be higher since to hit high notes, you need to be able to lift your tongue and as I can't...if I got it corrected, yeah? Thanks for any answers :) well my parents didn't even know I had it until i started going to the orthodontists when I was young and they were told as long as it didn't seem to be affecting my speech, like giving me some kind of impediment (which actually I do have...some words are extremely hard for me to say), then not to worry about it. They didn't see anything wrong with my talking and never got it done. I can talk fine as it is but I just...I hate kissing and not being about to stick my tongue out like my guy can and not being able to lick things...bah.

Are there are any government grants for individuals for down payment assistance available in Nebraska? My husband is permanently handicapped. On December 31, 2007 my husband just had surgery to repair a large aortic aneurism just below his heart, a completely blocked artery in his right leg, a partially blocked artery in his left leg, a second aneurism in his left leg, & he had a heart attack while in surgery. The cost is expected to be more than ONE MILLION DOLLARS. My husband's insurance has agreed to pay 97% of the cost of his surgery, we're to pay the remainder. With 5 people in our family (we have 3 sons under the age of 12 living at home), and he has the only income of less than $2,000 a month, that alone is going to be a trick for us. There is no way that we can come up with a down payment to buy a home. The home we've been renting for 5-1/2 years is structurally not safe. Our landlord & landlady are both in their 80's, both have life-threatening illnesses. Due to their medical expenses, our landlord & landlady can't afford to pay for the repairs we need & neither can we.
How to get my husband to stop smoking? He has had heart surgery and has the beginning stages of emphzemya. Doctors tell him to stop smoking, he says he wants to but doesn't. I told him I would not buy him any more cigerrettes & he got so hateful with me that when he finally had me in tears I got them. He gets mad at me for buying a book or a brand name shampoo I like (less than $10) but he spends more than this a day on his bad habit. I asked to go to a family outing that is a couple of hours away and he complained about the cost of driving up there and the expense of eating out, etc. The entire cost of one day of family fun is less than what he spends all week on cigerettes. He smokes between 2 & 3 packs a day. He will yell & cuss if he doesn't have his cigerettes & gets mad at anyone who tells him he needs to stop (unless you are a doctor or nurse). I asked him if he cared enough about our family to try to improve his health to live longer. He didn't answer. I know it is a habit but he won't try to stop. Help!

My cat pants / breathes with open mouth when exerted- she had surgery and is now breathing open mouthed- help! I have a new cat (almost a year old) that pants heavily with her mouth open when she plays a lot and is exerted. She also purrs VERY loudly, almost a snoring-noise, when she's sleeping. Well, she just went in to be declawed and spayed/neutered, did fine right after the surgery, and now the Doc says she's breathing with her mouth open, which causes him concern. I told him she does that when tired out, and he says this is a red flag... it could just be asthma (which he says is quite rare in cats) or possibly an enlarged heart. Which is more likely? We're newly married and have very little income to spend on vet bills... is it worth keeping her? Will it cost us a billion dollars to keep her healthy or should I give her to someone else? Does anyone have any other ideas of what it could be? The cat is only a couple months new to us... I don't want to give her away b/c she SNORES or breathes with her mouth open!!! I'd give her away b/c if it's something MAJOR like a big heart problem, I wouldn't be able to afford proper medical care! I'm not heartless- I want her to be taken care of, and if it's something major, I can't do it. I'm hoping above all hopes that it's NOT something major. Hence why I ask. We thought she was just "quirky" for breathing weird... we LOVE that about her! There is a VERY big difference between affording routine cat vet care and the occasional problems that creep up and signing up for a LIFETIME of major medical bills. Many of you dont' seem to understand that...
Health insurance assessment for girl with numerous surgeries in her past? OK... My fiance is not from the U.S. and I will have to completely support her for a few years probably. She is young (21) and very healthy now, non-smoker, but has had heart surgery, breast surgury (cancer related I believe), and one other surgery that I'm not to sure of... I'm really not kidding... I'm praying my father in Health Insurance can help, but his company is a hard-ass when it comes to bad past... He honestly cringed when he heard about her medical past... like it was her fault... I about wanted to kill him.. But anyway, does anyone have any idea about how much this will cost per month? thanks a bunch Ohhh yeah, she has no problem with medical coverage in her country because it is incredibly cheap and incredibly good..
Did anyone see 20?20 last night? About the mexican couple with conjoined twins who came here on a "visit" and "decided to stay" so their children could get better medical care? They couldn't speak a word of English. They did the surgery to separate the twins.I would like to know,Who paid for that surgery? My heart goes out to those sweet babies, but this surgery must have cost a fortune. I guess the reason it bothered me so much was because a dear friend of mine's little boy(7)was recently diagnosed with leukemia. He spent a few weeks in the hospital getting chemo and other treatments. The last I heard, the bill was well over $100,000.My friend will probably lose her house to pay this hospital bill, they are far from rich.Even the nurse said to her "too bad you aren't illegal, then you wouldn't have to pay it".I think this is just sad.Our own citizens can't get the mediacl care they need without losing everything, but others can just come here and get it all for free.Sorry for the rant, but this has been on my mind all day.
what would be the hypothesis, independent variable and dependent variable of the article? Prayers offered by strangers had no effect on the recovery of people who were undergoing heart surgery, a large and long-awaited study has found. And patients who knew they were being prayed for had a higher rate of post-operative complications like abnormal heart rhythms, perhaps because of the expectations the prayers created, the researchers suggested. Because it is the most scientifically rigorous investigation of whether prayer can heal illness, the study, begun almost a decade ago and involving more than 1,800 patients, has for years been the subject of speculation. The question has been a contentious one among researchers. Proponents have argued that prayer is perhaps the most deeply human response to disease, and that it may relieve suffering by some mechanism that is not yet understood. Skeptics have contended that studying prayer is a waste of money and that it presupposes supernatural intervention, putting it by definition beyond the reach of science. At least 10 studies of the effects of prayer have been carried out in the last six years, with mixed results. The new study was intended to overcome flaws in the earlier investigations. The report was scheduled to appear in The American Heart Journal next week, but the journal's publisher released it online yesterday. In a hurriedly convened news conference, the study's authors, led by Dr. Herbert Benson, a cardiologist and director of the Mind/Body Medical Institute near Boston, said that the findings were not the last word on the effects of so-called intercessory prayer. But the results, they said, raised questions about how and whether patients should be told that prayers were being offered for them. "One conclusion from this is that the role of awareness of prayer should be studied further," said Dr. Charles Bethea, a cardiologist at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City and a co-author of the study. Other experts said the study underscored the question of whether prayer was an appropriate subject for scientific study. "The problem with studying religion scientifically is that you do violence to the phenomenon by reducing it to basic elements that can be quantified, and that makes for bad science and bad religion," said Dr. Richard Sloan, a professor of behavioral medicine at Columbia and author of a forthcoming book, "Blind Faith: The Unholy Alliance of Religion and Medicine." The study cost $2.4 million, and most of the money came from the John Templeton Foundation, which supports research into spirituality. The government has spent more than $2.3 million on prayer research since 2000. Dean Marek, a chaplain at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and a co-author of the report, said the study said nothing about the power of personal prayer or about prayers for family members and friends. Working in a large medical center like Mayo, Mr. Marek said, "You hear tons of stories about the power of prayer, and I don't doubt them." In the study, the researchers monitored 1,802 patients at six hospitals who received coronary bypass surgery, in which doctors reroute circulation around a clogged vein or artery. The patients were broken into three groups. Two were prayed for; the third was not. Half the patients who received the prayers were told that they were being prayed for; half were told that they might or might not receive prayers. The researchers asked the members of three congregations — St. Paul's Monastery in St. Paul; the Community of Teresian Carmelites in Worcester, Mass.; and Silent Unity, a Missouri prayer ministry near Kansas City — to deliver the prayers, using the patients' first names and the first initials of their last names. The congregations were told that they could pray in their own ways, but they were instructed to include the phrase, "for a successful surgery with a quick, healthy recovery and no complications." Analyzing complications in the 30 days after the operations, the researchers found no differences between those patients who were prayed for and those who were not. In another of the study's findings, a significantly higher number of the patients who knew that they were being prayed for — 59 percent — suffered complications, compared with 51 percent of those who were uncertain. The authors left open the possibility that this was a chance finding. But they said that being aware of the strangers' prayers also may have caused some of the patients a kind of performance anxiety. "It may have made them uncertain, wondering am I so sick they had to call in their prayer team?" Dr. Bethea said. The study also found that more patients in the uninformed prayer group — 18 percent — suffered major complications, like heart attack or stroke, compared with 13 percent in the group that did not receive prayers. In their report, the researchers suggested that this finding might also be a result of chance. One reason the study was so widely anticipated was that it was led by Dr. Benson, who in his work has emphasized the soothing power of personal prayer and meditation. At least one earlier study found lower complication rates in patients who received intercessory prayers; others found no difference. A 1997 study at the University of New Mexico, involving 40 alcoholics in rehabilitation, found that the men and women who knew they were being prayed for actually fared worse. The new study was rigorously designed to avoid problems like the ones that came up in the earlier studies. But experts said the study could not overcome perhaps the largest obstacle to prayer study: the unknown amount of prayer each person received from friends, families, and congregations around the world who pray daily for the sick and dying. Bob Barth, the spiritual director of Silent Unity, the Missouri prayer ministry, said the findings would not affect the ministry's mission. "A person of faith would say that this study is interesting," Mr. Barth said, "but we've been praying a long time and we've seen prayer work, we know it works, and the research on prayer and spirituality is just getting started."
Is health care too costly? An insurance agent explained the high cost of health care by saying (more or less) ... " As medicine has advanced, we're spending more - lots more. Most of it is on babies born seriously premature, and people in the last five years of their life. People that would have died within months, are now living for five, ten, fifteen years - with massive medical interventions, at massive costs. Health costs in the US last year, according to Consumer Reports, were $7,000 per capita." I don't feel sorry for the insurance companies. They are making tidy profits. As a pre-Medicare retiree, I pay $5,000 per year in health insurance premiums plus co-pays on everything from lab work to doctor's office visits. I'm spending about $7,000 a year out of my own pocket. I guess I could save the insurance company lots of money if I die before they have to fork out payments for cancer treatment or a heart surgery. Grrrrrrrr! What is your opinion of health insurance in the USA? Oops! Math error by me. I pay $6,000 a year on health insurance premiums.

BAD BREEDER WARNING!!! www.yorkiebabiedolls.com? I purchased what I thought was a 3 pound at most, stud quality male. From WWW.YORKIEBABIEDOLLS.COM from Don Montgomery. What I received at the air port was a 3 pound starved pup, ridden with coccidia, a second row of teeth, and definitely not of breeding quality. He is now a 6 pounder with a terrible coat and huge ears. But it gets worse, 2 months later he starts limping on his back leg. He was diagnosed with leg-calf Perthes disease and required a $1500 dollar surgery. This disease is inherited from this parents or someone in his parents line, I told Don about this yet he still breeds both the parents EVERY SINGLE HEAT!!! He has way to many females and I know now that he is running a puppymill. Don offers a health guarantee but he does not stand by it at all. I am just devastated that I did not do my research on THE BREEDER before I purchased. Don does all his business through the internet, so please spread the word on his horrible puppymill and hopefully we can put him out of business. P.S. Fabio had his surgery and is recovering great! Now Don is trying to call me a liar and say I am the only one to complain about his horrendous breeding practices ( BREEDING A FEMALE EVERY HEAT ) I have medical receipts proving how much the surgery was. But I will now purse a case for the price of the dog and the surgery costs. I wish I didn’t have to go through this, but I truly know in my heart that he is BAD NEWS. STAY WAY!!!!!
my puppy has a liver shunt? We found out our puppy has a liver shunt - he is 5 months old and we have had him 3 months - he drinks alot and pees alot - the vet told us he would need surgery (which costs between 2500 - 3500 dollars and we have to take him out of state to get the surgery because our state dont have a vet that does it) we cant afford the surgery (we have 6 children) so the vet said we could have him put to sleep. I asked him how long he would live if we didnt have the surgery and he said he could live 6mo or 7yrs he couldnt be sure. I dont want my pup to suffer but I dont have the heart to put him to sleep. has anyone ever had a pup survive with a liver shunt? I dont know what to do. Can anyone give me some serious advice? Thank You.
