Why is weight loss surgery so controversial? I work with weight loss surgery patients. The decision to have weight loss surgery is a personal one. Why is there such a stigma on people who have surgery. Obesity is a disease. It is proven that weight loss surgery improves health. Why do people ridicule those who have surgery?
What does everyone think of weight loss surgery? I am having weight loss surgery November 27. I have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (I sleep with a BiPap machine already) and it's getting worse and I am not losing weight fast enough for the Dr's and really need to have it. they said this will alleviate the problem and of course I will be thin again. So do any of you have any advice or stories about your WLS that you'd like to share with me? or possible recipes that you used. Thanks in advance!
What are your thoughts on teenagers receiving weight loss surgery? Denies the real problem or life saving? After recent increases in the number of teenagers getting gastric bypasses and other types of surgery, it is widely becoming accepted quickly. However, is it right? Do you think if it saves lives, of course! Or, alternatively, do you think that these kids should approach weight loss from a wholistic perspective (dealing with their emotions through psychological counselling, complimented with education about proper nutrition and exercise?)

I have talked to my dr about my weight gain for years and all she says is diet and exercise and as I been seeing her i have crept on another 30 lbs I am fat as ever now and I have tried all diets and now my knees are in pain. I have to Have Surgery to Correct a Previous Weight Loss Surgery. How Can I Keep This From People? 2 and a Half years ago I had Lap Band weight loss surgery. It was done by two Docs that had good reputations and after a couple years of research, they were the only ones that took my insurance. They completely screwed up the surgery and I never lost weight, so I didn't have to tell friends. Only my family knows. Now I am in extream pain and having a surgery to try to repair it. This time I have one of the best Doctors in the world operating on me. The thing is I don't want some people to know that I'm having a correction to weight loss surgery. When I had the first surgery, I was riduculed by several people saying that I took the easy way out. Believe me, it hasn't been easy. I've tried every diet in the world plus having a nighmare surgery and months of pain only to be told by those who know that it is my own fault. It's going to take several weeks to recover. What do I tell the people that won't understand, like aquaintences, coworkers, & some of my friends that just don't get It??
I am considering weight loss surgery and I have Tricare Prime... do they permit weight loss surgery? I am 5 foot 3 and I weigh 228 pounds. I have been overweight most all my life (all of my adult life). I have attempted so many weight loss diets, pills, programs and even a gym and my success has been short lived with any of the them. I have been contimplating on looking in a different direction and considering Lapband or Gastric Bypass. My husband is active duty in the army and we have Tricare Prime for health insurance. I have not called Tricare to question if they support weight loss surgery as of yet. I thought I would first see if anyone out here is cyber space has been through what I am contimplating. If there are any military wives out there who have successfully had Tricare Prime pay for their weight loss surgery, or maybe you know someone who has... I would love to hear your stories, ideas and suggestions on how I could possibily get the ball rolling in this matter. FYI- we are currently stationed at Fort Hood in Texas if that makes any difference. Thanks so much.

I want to have weightlosss surgery because I weight over 300 lbs but you have to have money out of your own pocket to pay to see the dr, a Nutritionist and a Psychiatrist that you have to pay for out of your own pocket and that is about $1000.00. What questions do I ask a doctor about weight-loss surgery? I know that I am extremely obese, and all my doctor ever tells me is "your BMI looks to be high" and that's it! Would you consider weight loss surgery to be a doctor approved form of anorexia nervosa? I have had several friends who have had the procedure done, and I don't understand what the difference. They don't eat as much as they did, and they take vitamins, so really, what is the difference between the 2? I really don't want this to seem disrespectful. Like I said I have had friends who have had the surgery. I am just trying to figure it out. Thank you Abby, I should have clarified some things. I think Anorexia Nervosa is the wrong term. I should have said an eating disorder. I do know what anorexia is. I have suffered from it, and now I see my friends eating the same, if not less than I was eating. Why is this ok?

Well i was just diagnosed with seizers, The doctor put me on medication but i was wondering if i get the full affect of the medication because food does not stay in your stomach long so how does the process work for pills. What are your views on weight loss surgery? such as gastric bypass and the lap band. Personally, i think they are just medically-induced anorexia. It completely deprives your body of the nutrients it needs. sure, it works quickly, but eventually, you'll just keep getting skinnier because you can't build any muscle. or, you'll hit a plateau, and gain back all the weight. if you've had it, i'm not trying to judge you. tell me why you like it so much and how it's benefited your life. it drives me nuts when people just jump into the surgery, without even attempting to workout or lose the weight on your own. what i've found from talking to people is that most of them eat worse now that they've had the surgery. because they crave the junk, then they don't have room for anything healthy.

What is the Lap Band (Weight-loss surgery) Post-op recovery time? I have been cleared for surgery and am only waiting for the Doctor's scheduler to call me. This is expected to occur in a week or so. Recently I have come to find out that the post-op recovery time is between 2-4 weeks! I am an accountant and have a pretty sedentary job (obviously) Do I really need to be off that long? How does back surgery effect weight loss ? I had a diskcectomy 5 wks ago & began the Medifast diet the day after I got home from the hospital. My progress has been a little slower than most people. I was told by their NS( nutrition support ) that having had surgery resently could effect my weight loss but was not given a reason why. I am walking at least 5 days a week and staying on their plan. Is weight loss surgery healthy? That is the best way I have found to phrase this question. I tried asking this question yesterday but I do not think I phrased it right so I did not get the answers I was looking for. I am curious as to it being unhealthy compared to anorexia. I understand that anorexia is a mental disorder. I also understand that weight loss surgery is not. But is the limited food intake comparable to anorexia? I understand that a large person cannot be anorectic, because being anorectic involves having distorted image of ones self. Isn't rapid weight loss a sign of anorexia? And isn't the rapid weight loss a result of not being able to eat, either physically or emotionally, wouldn't that be considered anorexia also? I am not trying to be disrespectful, I am just trying to understand this. I have struggled with an eating disorder in the past, and I have friends who had weight loss surgery. I see them acting the same ways as I have in the past. I want to notice if something is wrong.

Getting Help paying for weight loss surgery? I'm 24 years old and I started gaining weight when I was like 8 ish I guess... I've been up and down my whole life. but never skinny. Weight Loss Surgery? I am 24 years old, and I weigh 330 pounds. I honestly don't eat a lot, and I don't eat the wrong foods. In fact, I eat quite healthy. Lots of fresh fruit & veggies, salads, yogurt, sugar free stuff, but I can't lose the weight. I've tried every diet under the sun, and yet nothing happens. If you have had weight loss surgery, can you join a slimming club? My Mum had weight loss surgery - her stomach stapled. And she is not doing very well atall. She had the surgery in may last year and has only lost a stone. She should have lost alot more then that as she is quiet a big lady - but not huge. I am worried that theonly option for her to slim down has failed, and yes it is her fault because she still eats sh!t and cant stop herself. She had the surgery in Belgium as she could not afford it over here £4,500 over there and £8,000 here! She is only meant to be able to eat a tiny bit of food every so many hours- but she manages to eat much more then that but she is most of the time sick! I think the biggest reason is because her body has had the change but her mind has not (over here you get counciling etc)whereas is Belgium its just the op nothing else. Does anyone else have aetna Ins. for weight loss surgery? Hello, I am in the middle of trying to get approved for weightloss surgery. I have done 5 of 6 months dr supervised weight loss appempt. I live in Illinois, and I have been unsuccessful in losing weight, I have even gained about 10 pounds. Is this a reason to deny me if all my other paper work comes in ok? I am afraid I am not going to be approved since I have had such a hard time trying to lose the weight. Any help would be great!
Diet after weight loss surgery? I was wondering if you ate the same things and amounts instead of getting the surgery, would you be ok? It just doesn't seem that you could get enough nourishment on that little food. But if you could eat that amount instead , without the surgery, couldn't you lose weight without the surgery. I just worry about not being healthy, but seems like people who have had the surgery seem ok. Is there any place on the web that tells you exactly what to eat after surgery ? Problems with a lap band (weight loss surgery)? Ok, I've had one for several years. I lost considerable weight (over 30 kg), but then started gaining again. I though I was just eating more unhealthy food. BUT, I recently found out the band was broken. I had surgery to fix it a few days ago. I heard of another person having it "fixed" the same day as me in that hospital. By broken I mean: the tubes connecting the actual band and the port have somehow been disconnected, and the fluid came running out, deflating the band. Did anyone have this happen before? And how common is this even? Granted, having it fixed was not a tragedy, but it does mean surgery again. Is this a manufacturing flaw? What can cause it? And more importantly, how likely is it it will happen again?

I was always very frail as a child and growing up and then when this happened I have gained a lot of weight in my lower abdomen...and nowhere else! I can't help but think this cyst is causing this. weight loss surgeries...if you can adhere to the surgery guidelines, why not diet? ...there have been several people I work with who have undergone weightloss surgery. I applaud their efforts to be healthy- but the dietary requirements are very strict- if you can stick to those- why not diet? For the record, I have struggled with weight my entire life...over the past 2 years I have lost weight very slowly...totalling 140 pounds. I was a candidate for the weight loss surgeries...but had a doctor who sat me down and asked.."have you really committed to a weight loss program? please consider that before you elect to have this surgery"... I think the rise of surgeries is part of our society's need for immediate gratification. Whether that is popular or not- that is MO.

Is Weight Loss Surgery Deductible? Is the portion of what I had to pay out of pocket (my health insurance paid the rest) for gastric bypass surgery deductible under the "7.5% of adjusted gross income rule" on a 1040?
Weight loss surgery? I would like to get the gastric by pass surgery or lap band- I have insurance.. does anyone know how i should begin the proccess? Should i find a doctor that does the procedure then he gets me qualified through insurance or do i start with my primary doctor? I live in NY
