Can your G.P prescribe free gym access in the U.K?
In 2007 I broke my ankle in four places and had to have major surgery on it. Before this I used to exercise everyday to keep my weight down. It took me nearly a year to walk properly again and then I had a baby in 2008. I still have trouble with my ankle in that I cant stand/walk for long periods on it without suffering the consequences for about a week afterwards. I did attend physio for 3 months after my accident but that was only to get me walking again. I really need to lose my baby weight and tried some light exercise but my ankle is killing me and like I said before that was about a week ago. I was wondering if I went to my doctor, if he could send me to a gym, on a specific programme for weight loss but also tailor for my foot as well, as I cant afford to go to one ANY suggestions/comments would be helpful THANKS

- I'm not sure but I'd guess no - you only usually get cheaper gym access if you're on benefits. Have you tried swimming? That's a great way to lose weight without stressing your joints
- I don't think so, they usually provide recovery physio on the NHS but once you've completed that, you're very much on your own. I would try cycling and swimming as these are low impact activities. Avoid running, just use light weights at a higher intensity to burn fats and work in intervals. It's a good way of extending the time your body functions are elevated. Longer periods at a higher heart rate will lead to increases in fat loss.
- Yes and No not free but a lot cheaper. When I stopped smoking almost 2 years ago, after a one to one basis with a lady who helped me from the Stop smoking Group, she suggested I should do something to help me stay of the Fags and said why not attend the Gym. She told me to go to the Doctor to refer me, which he did. I had to wait a while, but then had to go to the Gym to be assessed. I soon went to the Gym to do all the things which helped me to develop my breathing capacity. After a while I went into the pool and enjoyed swimming so much that I rather went there then into the Gym. Anything that helps I could do. I paid an annual fee I believe was £4.00 then £1.70 for each hour session. So it seems to me you have good reasons to go to your GP and I am sure he/she will refer you. Go for it and good luck
- what you like at swimming, burns calories without over straining the joints and I find it enjoyable as well.
- No idea but a very interesting question.
